Science, art, music timelines?
I’ve decided that I’d like to integrate as much of our studies as I can, around our history lessons…so I am in search of some good resources for science, art and music timelines…Any suggestions?
What I envision is sticking with our history books as our “spine” (for my daughter, that is the “History of US” series by Joy Hakim, currently the 2nd book…for my son, the “Story of the World” series by Susan Wise Bauer, currently the first book…And yes, I really want to have them both in the same book/time period to simplify things…but I’m not there yet, and that’s a whole different story for another time.) And with those as a reference, I’d like to add in the scientific discoveries/inventions and scientists of the time frame…art/artists/art periods…and music/musicians/musical periods. As relevant to whatever they are studying. Maybe even sprinkle in some mathematicians (as age appropriate).
Weekly Challenges, anyone?
I’m still pursuing the educational aspects and project ideas for Minecraft
, as mentioned in one of my latest posts…
But at the same time I’m also pursuing ways to use Lego in our homeschooling…
So far, my Googling is primarily turning up things about Lego Robotics. Something that we don’t own, which is particularly expensive, and which my kids are not particularly interested in. (And a Lego Robotics team just started here locally that my kids had a chance to attend and they were both completely uninterested, sigh.)
What I’M interested in, instead, are project ideas to have my kiddos build something with Legos with certain criteria. I have no idea what criteria, but there must be people out there doing something like this with their kiddos, so I posted on some homeschool forums to see what other people might be able to share with me…
Kids and website design
Do your kids like to play on the computer a lot? Mine too. So much so that I had to wrestle with them for time on my own computer! (Until I got Times Up Kidz.)
How about blogging or building websites?
I’ve been thinking for awhile that I want to get my kids into web design, if they’re interested…Since I create websites (not just this one, I have several online business…check out the links in my sidebar) it just makes sense that I would share this skill with my kiddos. And its very educational! There’s writing and typing and reading and designing and all sorts of things to learn from it that I’m not even thinking about!
A cool idea for bookmarks
Just came up with this idea recently and thought I’d share.
If you like to keep track of what pages or lessons you’ve done each day with your children…and if you’re like me and usually forget to do so…Here’s an idea that I just came up with that is helping me out tremendously!
Its so simple, I’m really surprised I didn’t think of it sooner! Make yourself a plain bookmark for each book you want to track. Something easy to do with paper or cardstock (I prefer cardstock, as its easier to use something stiffer so it helps open the book to the page easier.) Just cut something like this:
(If you’d rather just purchase something pre-made, these are available for $4 for a 50 pack at this website.)
