the BEST book!
oh my gosh i HAVE to share this amazing book!
i found out about it from melissa wiley here. so of course i had to check it out from the library.
let me tell you…the book is ENORMOUS! immediately i was chomping to dig in…the bigger the book, the better, in my eyes…and i wasn’t sure yet if it would be appropriate for maeven, nor even if she’d be interested in it. so i started it on my own. right about chapter 3 she saw me with it and asked what it was about…i told her a little about it and she said “read it to me please?” good thing i only had just started it!
Great library trip
Got some really awesome books today at the library. I have had little success getting my kids excited about picking books out from the library, so I go by myself when my husband is home…and its really wonderful to be able to browse the shelves looking for new books to read…new jewels to treasure. Oh I SO love books!
Today I felt especially excited by some of my finds, including:
The artwork on the cover of this one is what appealed to me. So cute! Looks like a really neat book about things that grow.
This book is REALLY COOL! We already read most of it…Tyren asked me to read it to him…and while it was really above his understanding, it was interesting enough to capture his attention til nearly the end. It is a bit long, so we didn’t get through the whole thing yet, but its really fascinating!!
sick day
yesterday we did actually accomplish a few things…
2 math lessons
maeven finished reading the chapter book she was working on “strawberry’s new friend”
we looked through some more library books on topics we are studying in history and science
we finished the “beaks” book (it was really good! very interesting and great pics!)
we watched our latest signing time dvd we got from the library: “my day”
but that’s about it. maeven was still getting over a cold and i was just starting one.
today i woke up feeling like hell. so we haven’t accomplished a thing yet today.
i take that back…maeven started AND finished another chapter book…”megan the monday fairy”
well the day isn’t over yet. when adam gets home i really want to try to get a couple more math lessons done, despite how i’m feeling. its really the only thing that i’m on a strict time frame with…since i want us to be done with it by the end of the year.
last week went pretty well
even though i had that bad day…and there was still a lot of fighting amongst the children…i think the homeschooling part of the week actually went pretty well!
at the end of the week…
we had finished the 2 chapters i had wanted to finish in history (SOTW).
we finished the book dragonsong
we finished the book thora
we completed 9 chapters in math
maeven did 2 days of copywork (not what i wanted, but its a start!)
maeven had read a LOT on her own (finished one book and got very far in another book)
we did 5 spelling lessons (right on track)
we looked through a few extra books on the topics that we are studying in history (didn’t read them all…they weren’t all that interesting, honestly…so we read the interesting parts and looked at a lot of pictures)
not a great day
today was rough.
we did still accomplish some things…got 1 math lesson and 1 spelling lesson done (didn’t get to the other math lesson i wanted to get done, but i will get us caught up over the weekend). and we listened to the SOTW chapter we were scheduled to read, in the car. (i have the book on cd, which is hecka handy when a day like today happens and we HAVE to get in the car and go SOMEWHERE or we’re going to kill each other!)
and we did read some of our read-aloud (me reading) book, dragonsong. ok so that’s not exactly high quality literature in a classic literature sense…but this is an EXCELLENT author, i tell ya! one of my alltime favs! and so i am just tickled pink that maeve is diggin the dragonriders of pern as much as i do! and i do feel it qualifies as a “living book.” there is much depth to the books and their characters. so i have it down as our current literature read. we’re nearly done. i want to finish it because i have several other books piling up from the library that i would like us to get to.
another good day!
today my mom came and took tyren out for a couple hours so maeven and i could get some uninterrupted work done. it went really well! she came in the morning and took him to the preK storytime at fig garden library (a popular one…the librarian that does that particular storytime is quite well loved around here). apparently he had a great time singing and playing and then nana took him to a nearby park and then to lunch at mcd’s. he was quite the happy camper.
in the meantime maeven and i had a successful time. took much longer than i had anticipated, but we got 2 math lessons and a spelling lesson done. there was some whining and crying a couple times when she really wanted to do something else instead (play on the computer), but she got over it and we finally got it all done, and actually pretty fun for most of the time. or at least painless for the most part (other than those whiney moments).
2nd day a success!
we actually did quite a lot today.
it went pretty well, although for some reason…despite having things to do, the kids continue to bicker like crazy and are driving ME crazy with it! *sigh* now i understand why mom would sometimes knock my brother and my heads together to get us to stop fighting. LOL! (no, i won’t ever do that, but i UNDERSTAND it now!)
ok, so what we accomplished:
we completed one entire math lesson (not really a huge feat, they are short…but considering tyren was interrupting us, that’s something to be proud of, i think.) i still have 2 more to do to catch up for today (since we didn’t get the lessons from yesterday done). i may do it when daddy gets home and can entertain the little guy.
