2015 Great Summer Purge and Clean: The Kitchen

Weeks 2 and 3 were The Kitchen…dun dun DUUUUUUUUNNNNNN!!!

My kitchen was seriously TUH. RASHED! (trashed)  It was. For real. I didn’t take any before pics. Intentionally. It was embarassing.  Our family is horrible about cleaning up after ourselves in the kitchen, so it was gross, y’all. But I knew it would get cleaned, so I didn’t stress….I knew all would be well again. And it is!! I once again have a (mostly) clean kitchen! Ok, it’s a bit messy again, but it’s nothing that 10min in there can’t take care of it….and that’s where I like it. Easily clean-upable. Well, except the floor. But we won’t go there. Floors are the bane of my existence….don’t get me started….

So I allotted 2 weeks for the kitchen because it really was THAT BAD. And I went slowly through it. Bit by bit. I cleaned, I scrubbed, I decluttered, I reorganized, I kicked some seriously kitchen BUTT!! Especially in my gnarly refrigerator.  I could have easily gone 3 weeks, I still had some stuff I didn’t get to, but I did enough. I’m pretty happy with it.

The first week was all about cleaning. Every cupboard, every appliance, every surface, every nook and cranny got wiped and scrubbed and cleaned. Well, except the oven and the floor. Never did get to those. Well I did part of the floor, just didn’t finish it. Another day.

The second week in the kitchen was my declutter and reorganize the kitchen week. That way I could focus on a different purpose each week, made each task easier. And decluttering was easier when things were already clean.

Apparently I didn’t even take any after pics….and without the before pics, I don’t know that you’d be particularly impressed anyway…but I did find one before/after set of pics….the cupboard above my fridge, which I knew I wouldn’t be doing much with. I don’t ever go in there and I knew that I had decluttered it last summer, and it’s full of stuff we rarely use, so I doubted there was much to do in there…well I actually did do some decluttering in there:

After

Not a gigantic difference, but I did find a few things to get rid of in there, and a few things to move elsewhere, where they made more sense.

And here’s the newly clean top of my fridge:
(That cupboard above is the one you can see closed in this pic.)

Such a good feeling, being tidy and wiped. Keep in mind….I am NOT one of those moms that cleans like this regularly. This is a once a year thing, y’all! The rest of the year, I could care less what the top of my fridge looks like!!! Seriously! But for now, it’s a nice feeling!!

Remember, this is my annual Purge and Clean….my goal is to do the purging to get rid of all the excess STUFF so as to make the rest of the year easier….for homeschooling, for finding things, for keeping things clean…and the cleaning I’m doing this summer is a DEEP CLEAN that I mostly only do once a year. Or only catch up on once a year. I do catch up on dishes before I start cleaning the kitchen, of course….but things like wiping walls and cabinets and refrigerator tops….that’s something that rarely happens around here, so it’s nice to know that I schedule it in for each summer and know it will get done at least once a year.

So next up….the living room….stay tuned for a post on that!  Post a comment below if you’re joining me and doing some Purging and Cleaning of your own!!

Zone 1, Day 7: Table and floor, Great Summer Purge and Clean

It's only fair to share...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on RedditShare on StumbleUponShare on TumblrEmail this to someone

Well the last day of the kitchen zone was highly successful! I didn’t think I had it in me, but I made it through transforming my grungy kitchen floor into a clean floor! Also cleared and scrubbed our kitchen table, which I had cleared off earlier in the week but hadn’t actually scrubbed.

Hard to tell with the floor, because I didn’t take any before pics (too embarassing!) but take my word for it, this is a HUGE improvement!

I also discovered something this past week. I have a lot more on my plate now with all my client work, so I’m not actually going to be able to allot every single day for 8wks to my purge and clean, or I will have some very unhappy clients. So, I decided to go through my schedule and make Fridays my “Catchup Day”. Then I can do whatever I need to catchup on, be it housework or client work. I’ve shuffled the jobs around to allow for this, combining some jobs earlier in the week to allow for an empty day on Friday.

Another thing I hadn’t been able to plan for when I started creating my schedule for the summer: Big Pickup Day.  That’s the day that we are allowed to pile all sorts of garbage and clippings along the curb in front of our house and the city will pick it up at our assigned time. I never know what date it will be until they send out the flier.

So it turns out this year’s Big Pickup, for us, is next Tuesday. And we are busy all day Monday, so we have to get this whole thing done this weekend. SO, with that in mind, I shuffled things around on my schedule even further…and moved my “Yard” zone to this coming week, and moved everything else down a week. I think it should work nicely. Had to fiddle with things a wee bit because I still have to plan for my son’s birthday party in July, so moving things down, I had to allot for that time in my 2nd week of July schedule. But I think I got it all sorted out! Time will tell.

So…the Purge & Clean continues, with some alterations.

Now that I’m working on my yard (during 100 degree weather, now THAT’s fun!) I can pull all the stuff I want to throw out to the curb this weekend and do some serious purging!

I’ve already had people come and pick up our Lil Tykes climbing structure I put out (that’s the good thing about the scavengers….they give old stuff a new home! Keeps it out of the landfill, so I’m happy!) Plus the pitchforks (WHY did I even have those? Inherited from my grandpa and never had a need for them…not much hay around here, LOL!) and the metal scavengers took the big metal pole our last tree pruners found in our tree. NO idea, what that was from! LOL!  So things are already depurging from the backyard!

If I can find the energy to work more on it tomorrow, before noon and the heat really cranks up..We’ll see…I’m already exhausted from scrubbing the floor (by hand) yesterday and all the hauling of piles of leaves and dirt and branches to the curb. If I can find it in me to do more heavy labor tomorrow, I am going to go through my shed and see what else I can purge. But I may have to wait until cooler months to truly do a good job on that. It’s ridiculous here in the summer! (Central Valley of California…it’s a desert here and summer temps are in the upper 90s and low 100s from May through Sept, typically.)

Now I’m off to catch up on client work, while I don’t have the energy in me to do anything physical! Sitting at the computer is a nice change from working hard in the heat!

Zone 1, Day 5 & 6: Sink counters and cupboards, Great Summer Purge and Clean

It's only fair to share...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on RedditShare on StumbleUponShare on TumblrEmail this to someone

Day 5 & 6 of my purge and I still am mainly doing cleaning…not so much purging. Mostly because I have so very much that is competing in my life right now, that I just haven’t had the time to open up those cupboards. But the outside messes definitely needed to be attended to. If worse comes to worse and I don’t get to the insides…so be it. They are not really all that bad anyway, so I still feel good that I’ve accomplished so much on the outside.

But I knew the kitchen was going to be this challenging. As you can see in the pics below, I’ve allowed my clean sink to get messy again. Such is our life in this house. Being that this area is used constantly, I never expected it to stay clean for long…I just feel good having gotten it properly cleaned this week! 🙂  And now it is clean again, after the work I did today. The below pics were 2 days in the making, but I can finally say the area is DONE! Even got all the dishes finally done!

I also wiped down the outsides and insides of all the cupboard doors and the floor along the base of the cupboards. Lookin good!

I’m writing about day 5 on day 6 because I didn’t have time to finish yesterday.

Yesterday was jam-packed with “Rocket Day”, as well as 3D printing, starting our day off at  our homeschool charter. Here’s some pics of how fun that was!!

Apparently I didn’t get any pics of my daughter yesterday, but that’s my son in the striped shirt and grey shorts with the blonde braid.

The day was super fun! I would have taken more pics, but then I was helping to build rockets, and never did get another chance. But the kids had tons of fun, so it was a successful morning/afternoon.

By the time we got home, it was later in the afternoon…I only had a couple hours and then it was Date Night (my parents take our kids once a week for a couple hours in the evening so hubby and I can have some time together). And then bedtime, then I had to work with my cohost to plan for our interview we were having the next day, for the Savvy Homeschool Moms podcast. So basically I only had a couple hours the entire day to work on my zone. But I did a fair amount!

Then today…well I still had things to finish from yesterday…and I know I vowed never to do a rollover of chores in this challenge, but I made an executive decision that I felt it was more important to finish these piles of dishes rather than work on walls.

Really, I put the walls on there at the end of the week because that gives me some leeway in case something like this happens and I have things to catch up on, so it’s all good. I tweak to suit my needs as I go. As long as I keep moving forward, it’s all good!

Tomorrow I’m to do the table/chairs, but I think I may try to do that today actually, since it’s not that bad, because I also have planned to do the floor and that WILL take a lot of time/energy. Plus I won’t have all day to work on it because we have some friends coming over in the morning for a couple hours.

I am have a ton of client work I need to get done. Last summer when I did this I didn’t have so much client work…this summer, I’m starting to see the need for a day or 2 NOT planned to purge and clean. Otherwise I may go mad without any break, nor time to work on other things! So this weekend I’m going to go over my plan again and see what I can combine to free up a day or each week.

For tomorrow I will do what I can to clear the stuff off the floor in the areas that it’s creeping back already, and sweep and scrub my disgusting kitchen floor. And I’ll just skip anything else I didn’t get to in the kitchen.

There’s still a LOT I’ve gotten done on this kitchen! Big pat on my back for that! Hubby keeps coming home and saying “wow!” so I know I’m doing something right! 🙂

So where are you at with your clean and purge? Have you joined me? If so, leave a comment below and let me know what you’ve accomplished this week or what you plan to accomplish during the rest of the week or next week!

Zone 1, Day 4: Microwave area, Great Summer Purge and Clean

It's only fair to share...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on RedditShare on StumbleUponShare on TumblrEmail this to someone

Well things are still coming along, but I’m getting a little knocked off track by life. But I still kicked butt on this area! Didn’t get to the inside of the cupboards yet, but they are not actually all that bad right now, so I’m not going to stress.

What I DID accomplish in this area:

  • The obvious messy counter. Wiped and scrubbed.
  • Microwave totally cleaned, inside and out and under. (It was GROSS!)
  • All cupboard doors wiped thoroughly, inside and out. Drawer outsides wiped too.
  • Walls and ceiling above cupboards wiped some…we don’t have a vent in our kitchen, so the ceiling gets grungy from cooking.
  • Under the cupboard, where my rice cooker regularly blasts steam, bleached and wiped. (It was brown and sticky! Not all of it came off, but it is greatly improved!)
  • Floor along the area wiped down thoroughly (this will make cleaning the floor much easier at the end of the week!)

Then I got derailed by life and children and client work and such again. But that area ended up being shiny and clean so I felt good about the work done. Trying not to be a perfectionist here!

Anything I get done is an improvement!! Or, as Flylady says “Housework done incorrectly still blesses your family!”  Meaning, perfection is not necessary. ANYTHING helps!!

Now, I’m off to get ready for an interview for the Savvy Homeschool Moms podcast. Then I’ll get yesterday’s post done.

Zone 1, Day 3, Stove area, Great Summer Purge and Clean, DONE!

It's only fair to share...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on RedditShare on StumbleUponShare on TumblrEmail this to someone

Well I’m exhausted. Seriously! The kitchen is darn near killing me! But I knew it would. It’s always the messiest part of my house and I wanted to do it first because I was just sick of looking at it and wading through the mess. But now I’m starting to feel like I should have followed my “start with something easy” advice and gone with the living room first.

Let this be a lesson to you! Start easy! But I will persevere, as this is what I started, so I want to see it through to the end.

But the good news is that the worst of this zone is done! The fridge and stove (not the oven yet….don’t look in my oven! Lol!) are spotless and the cupboards are decluttered and organized! Today I move to my messy microwave and all the cupboards on the wall above and below.

But on to the pics of the fruits of yesterday’s labor! Hover your mouse over the pic to see the title, click to see full size.

As you can see, I kicked butt on that stove! The cupboards are nice and tidy now, though I forgot to take before pics so you’ll have to take my word for it.

Honestly it wasn’t a gigantic change with the cupboards, so the before and after pics wouldn’t have been super exciting. I just put like things together and poured out and recycled a bunch of cooking wine and flavored vinegars that we’re old old old and we would never use. Freed up a lot of space! Nice to not have everything so crammed in there!

And wiping down bottles was essential. It’s amazing how sticky the outsides can get! And then that makes the shelves sticky, you know how it gets, I’m sure. So shelves were wiped as well.

So all in all, a successful day, even if I didn’t get started until after 3pm (I know! What a lazy butt I am!!) and was still going til nearly bedtime. Almost gave up a couple times, was so tired. But I kept on keepin on!

“Just do one more part” was my mantra. When I got to the shelves I was like, “They’re not really messy, I did them last year. Do I really need to do them again?” But no, I forced myself to see it through to the end by just focusing on ONE SHELF AT A TIME. I can handle just one. Ok, I’ll do one.

Wellll, I can do just one more…..yeah, I can do that, one more….you get the point. And that’s how I made it through the rest of the area yesterday when I wasn’t feelin it, folks!

Now I’m off to get this day started! Going to get going earlier today so I can take a break BEFORE bedtime! Day 4, here I come!
