Song-of-the-Week–Shoo Fly

Sorry I really suck at doing anything on a regular basis. :)   Hey, I’m still adding songs here and there at least! :)

Just now my son Tyren (TEERen) noticed a fly and I started singing this song…so then I figured I should teach it to him and make it a song-of-the-week. OK, so its the end of the week. Oh well, better late than never! :)

Here’s the music and lyrics.

And just to be able to post the lyrics here, here they are! (They spelled it different, but oh well.)

Shew, fly, don’t bother me,
Shew, fly, don’t bother me,
Shew, fly, don’t bother me,
For I belong to somebody.

I feel, I feel,
I feel like a morning star,
I feel, I feel,
I feel like a morning star.

Song of the Week–You Are My Sunshine

One of the problems I’ve been having lately…other than just not finding the time or energy to blog lately…is that all the songs that I think of using for my song-of-the-week don’t seem to have a video or recorded form online that I can easily find. So that would mean that if I want to share it here, I’ll have to record myself or my kids singing it. Which just hasn’t been happening lately. Although I will keep trying.

So I decided to go with an oldie but goodie this week. This is a song that I cannot believe I’ve not really shared with my kids yet! Such a classic! I love this song, and am excited to share it with my kids this week!

If you don’t yet know the tune (although I find it hard to believe anyone wouldn’t)…here’s where you can find it. You’ll need popups enabled.

Song-of-the-Week: "Sally-mander"

This is a song I learned from SCICON.

Found the lyrics here. (Although they were already in my head…Easier to copy/paste.)

Can’t seem to find the song anywhere…will have to wait til tomorrow for me to get a video of my kids singing it or something. It’s too late and dark now to do it.

CHORUS:
SAAAAL…LEEEE…MAAAN…DEEER… OW!
SALLY SALLY SALLY MANDER – CALIFORNIA NEWT
SALLY SALLY SALLY MANDER – CALIFORNIA NEWT
SALLY SALLY SALLY MANDER – CALIFORNIA NEWT
SALLY SALLY SALLY MANDER – CALIFORNIA NEWT
VERSES:
1. She’s got four legs – - got four legs
And a little orange suit – - lil orange suit
All the boy salamanders – - boy salamanders
Think she’s real cute – - she’s real cute
She was born in the creek – - born in the creek
Used to breath with gills – - breathe with gills
But now she’s a big girl – - now she’s a big girl
And she lives in the hills – - lives in the hills.

Song-of-the-Week: Big Blue Marble

This is a song near and dear to my heart. It was a song we sang at SCICON Outdoor School, where I used to work…It was written by Michelle Martin.

For some reason it will not let me embed the video for this, so you can see it being performed here. It’s not a great video, but you can get the gist of the tune. I’ll try to rip a better copy of this tomorrow…I have it on cd.

Here are the lyrics:

Big Blue Marble
by Michelle Martin (SCICON)

We will love the Earth wherever we roam,
For this big blue marble is our home
And we know that everyone in it,
And we know that everything in it,
Will always be a part of who we are.

Substitute “the Earth” with :
… clean air …
… the animals …
… the trees …
… other cultures …
… clean water …
… whatever you are teaching about!

Song of the Week–Sarasponda

Man, I’m really lousy at getting things done on a schedule. So here’s the song, a day late, woops! Better late than never! Gave ya an extra day to work on “This Land is Your Land”. :)

OK this is a song I learned as a child that my family used to sing together…particularly in car rides. We would sing it all together a couple times and then the boys would sing the “boom da” part and the girls would do the sarasponda part, at the same time. Sounds real cool together! It also can be sung in a round.

I was told that it was a dutch spinning song, but when I was researching it quickly just now, I found one site that says that people always think this but that it’s not actually a Dutch song…so who knows? All I know is its a fun song and it brings back childhood memories for me, so here it is!

Song of the Week–This Land is Your Land

This seems an appropriate song this week. It’s funny because I just now sat down to make this post and hadn’t a clue what song to do (too many choices!) and for some reason it just came to me just this second that this would be a good song.

I really want my children to grow up hearing and singing American folk songs, and also patriotic songs…and an American patriotic folk song like this is perfect, I think!

Not only is it perfect because of our new president being inaugurated tomorrow (a history-making president which has caused such a surge of patriotism and hope in our country!) …but also today is Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday…when we remember another great man in our history that helped our country become a better place…something I know much of our country is hoping that President Obama will do as well.

Song of the Week: On a Cold and Frosty Morning (Three Craw)

So sorry about last week! I had a song all figured out (Waddly-acha) and started teaching to my kids and was trying to get them to help me demo the song in a video because I couldn’t find the song recorded anywhere on the net…but they wouldn’t go for it. And then they decided they didn’t like the song after all. Bleh. Maybe another week. By then the week was half over and I just didn’t bother doing one, figured I’d just do one this week.

I’m getting really bad at posting these on Sundays, so I guess I’ll just plan on doing it sometime on Mondays from now on. And obviously I’m not so reliable for that either…but hey, the day’s not over yet!

Song of the Week: Auld Lang Syne

Woops! I neglected to post a song of the week yet!! Sorry about that!

Could there be any other song for this week?

Here’s a good video for learning this song, including the lyrics:

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/lLG8aDITh8g" width="425" height="350"/]

You could also use their website, which plays a line and has you repeat for the whole song! Pretty cool! Not the best singers but that part doesn’t really matter.

Then head over to YouTube and search the name of this song and you’ll find a ton of great versions that are very artistically done. But I like to teach my kids the simple, basic version before I go and show them the fancy versions…that way they already have it firmly in their mind and the other versions don’t confuse them.

Song of the Week–We Wish You a Merry Christmas

I picked this song this week because I wanted to go with a super simple one, for this hectic-last-minutes-til-Christmas week. Enjoy!

Lyrics:

We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin;
Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer
We won’t go until we get some;
We won’t go until we get some;
We won’t go until we get some, so bring some out here

We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Song of the Week–Feliz Navidad

Last night I was getting my kids ready for bed and my 3yr old kept singing songs while jumping on the bed (figures) and somehow at some point one of us started singing “Feliz Navidad” (might have be, I really don’t remember! LOL!)  It is such a cute little song, and I love that the kids get to learn a little spanish, so here it is! Our “Song for the Week”!!

A little about Spanish pronunciation…whenever you see an E, it is pronounced “ay” like in the word “angel”…an A is always pronounced “ah” like the O in “olive”….an I is always pronounced “ee” like the E in “evil”… an O is always pronounced “oh” like in “over”…and a U is always pronounce “oo” like double O in the word “food”.
