Beware of false history textbooks

I read an interesting article this morning, which I found because someone had tweeted that site’s previous article about altered history textbooks. Fascinating, and scary, stuff!

It makes me really wonder what books to believe, and what I should be teaching my children!

But then, I’ve had this discussion before on the Secular Charlotte Mason yahoogroup (LOVE that group, by the way!)…about how history is frequently altered in books and how its all really quite subjective.

Have you seen these books?

These books and more are by author James W. Loewen. Someone who really seems to know his history. I have checked out several of these books from our local library and perused them. Making a mental note to purchase my own copy ASAP. (Haven’t yet, *sigh*, but I intend to!)  There’s much to be learned here.

Song of the Week–This Land is Your Land

This seems an appropriate song this week. It’s funny because I just now sat down to make this post and hadn’t a clue what song to do (too many choices!) and for some reason it just came to me just this second that this would be a good song.

I really want my children to grow up hearing and singing American folk songs, and also patriotic songs…and an American patriotic folk song like this is perfect, I think!

Not only is it perfect because of our new president being inaugurated tomorrow (a history-making president which has caused such a surge of patriotism and hope in our country!) …but also today is Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday…when we remember another great man in our history that helped our country become a better place…something I know much of our country is hoping that President Obama will do as well.

Song of the Week–Feliz Navidad

Last night I was getting my kids ready for bed and my 3yr old kept singing songs while jumping on the bed (figures) and somehow at some point one of us started singing “Feliz Navidad” (might have be, I really don’t remember! LOL!)  It is such a cute little song, and I love that the kids get to learn a little spanish, so here it is! Our “Song for the Week”!!

A little about Spanish pronunciation…whenever you see an E, it is pronounced “ay” like in the word “angel”…an A is always pronounced “ah” like the O in “olive”….an I is always pronounced “ee” like the E in “evil”… an O is always pronounced “oh” like in “over”…and a U is always pronounce “oo” like double O in the word “food”.

Feliz Navidad lyrics:

A Ram Sam Sam Video

Maeven made this video of Tyr singing our song-of-the-week! Which has been going really well, incidentally! He really enjoys singing it! I taught it to him in the shower, of all places, LOL!  We often shower together in the mornings and it just seemed like a fun place to sing! LOL!

Anyway, here it is! Maeven was holding the camera, and actually did pretty good at steadying it, considering her inexperience, I think!  And I sang along to help out. :)
